Shopping in naples

Narrow cobblestone streets full of people and bikes. Unbelievably old
and ornate. Great shopping, although we are struggling with the
language.

Arrivati in napole

Ciao, we we very lucky to have a fast run through customs and an even
faster taxi driver who transferee us to gattwick airport to make our
connecting flight to Naples. We found a back staff member who took
pity on us and checked our baggage with 2 minutes to spare.
The flight to Naples was beautiful, flying over the alps and lake
como. On arrive in Naples we were picked up by a driver from our hotel
who gave us a thrilling drive through Naples in heavy traffic. It was
one of the most crazy driving experiences I have ever had. Our hotel
is fantastic. It is in a very old building and the picture is a view
from our balcony. We walked in town for a couple of hours and had a
calzone pizza for dinner (when in Rome ). We got tired early and went
off to bed. I had the bright idea of a bath before going to sleep. I
instantly fell asleep and lisa woke up later that night to find me
asleep in a cold bath. I guess it's been a long day.

Sitting in Singapore

We are sitting in Singapore airport and our flight is delayed 3 hours
so it looks like we will miss our naples connection. Still not sure
what will happen. Also missed out on our upgrade. However premium
economy is pretty comfortable.

Lost at mount horrible

Saturday afternoon saw Manfred( the bike) and myself exploring in the
winburndale reserve. This beautiful view over the Bathurst plain was
taken just before we got hopelessly lost. Eventually I found my way
back out by following my roost.

Bridal Track adventure

In the spirit of always looking for a bit of extra fun, alex and I
went bush on gurti this week. We had a great nights camping out on the
bridal track. We managed to get gurti all the way in to the junction
of the Macquarie and Turon rivers. It turned out to be a little more
challenging than we thought with 3 river crossings complete with big
rocks in the river bed and steep sandy river banks. We made it to the
junction only to find we had lost a bag off the bike. We had to
backtrack in search off all of our food and our stove. Luckily we
found it only a couple of kms back. We had a great camp beside a
beautiful billabong complete with a fox, goats, kangaroo's and a sea
eagle?

Upcoming Adventre

Lisa and I are off an a new adventure starting next week. We are flying to Italy and riding the Amalfi Coast down to Sicily. Then we are then travelling by ferry to the Aolean Islands ( I think I spelled that correctly?) to visit the Island that Lisa's family come from. All Tesoriero's come from an Island call Punarea which is 40Km off the coast of Sicily. There are no cars on the island so I guess it should be pretty bike friendly.

Mike Coates Day 3 - 118kms ride time 6 hours. We had a great day lots of scenery and only 1 ferry trip. Only problems was too many wankers on harleys on the same road. Also log trucks.

Mike Coates Day 4 - 110kms 5 hours ride time with 2 ferry trips. The ferry's are starting to suck. It's good to get day 4 over with as your arse usually starts to improve from here on. Bikes are going great. Tomorrow we cross into the USA again on one last bloody ferry. Still can't post photos but should be sorted again soon

Mike Coates Day 5 - 2 ferry's, 2 times through customs , 75 kms in 4 hrs riding and a 12 hour day. Sure we are tired bit it's hard having this much fun. We are back in the USA and finished with the ferry's . My camera phone is working again so I will try to upload some photos and video each day. We are camped in a forest behind a decommisioned army base tonight. The camp gives me the creeps because it's so much like duntroon. We have a huge day tomorrow, over 115kms with a monster climb halfway through the day . More tomorrow

Mike Coates Day 6 - 110kms over 5 hours, rolling hills and a head wind. A doddle really. The hilite was a 13km burg called mt walker at about the half way mark. We are starting to get fit and the riding in Washington is fantastic. Lots of log trucks but at least they give you a bit of room. Check out the video of salmon spawning in the river. Off to bed early as we have a 120+ km day tomorrow.

Mike Coates Wildlife-someone asked me if we have seen much wildlife. Well mostly deer beside the roads. We did also have a doe and her 2 little babies right beside our tent one morning eating grass. The rakoons are in camp most nights. Last night I got up to one 3 times hoping through our gear. At the camp next door to us it dragged a pannier 100 feet into the forest . It also opened a zipper in a blokes handle bar bag and ate his power gels. Maybe that's why it had the energy to drag his bag off . I just got woken by a lot of splashing in the creek beside us, I crept out of the tent & down to the creek. It was a racoon fishing . It wasn't happy that I put the torch on it so I backed off quick. They can carry rabies so you don't mess with them. No bears yet however most camps have a bear proof bin so I guess they are around.

Mike Coates Day 7- what a monster. 92 miles(147km) with 6hours 20 minutes in the saddle . The last 40 miles was into a killer headwind that meant we were down on the drops head down all the way. We arrived shattered but found a beautiful camp site in the dunes and brendan cooked a great red curry . We were off to bed before dark. 75 miles to do today if we can do it. See ya

Mike Coates Day 8 - 79 miles(128kms) 6 hours in the saddle. We got killer head winds and blazing heat on day 8. We decided to go for a big one again so that we can have a half day off on day 9. We made it to cape dissapointment which is at the mouth of the Colombia river. A beatiful campsite except for the sea fog that rolled in late Arvo which resulted in a cold wet night with the very loud fog horn sounding constantly all night. Very little sleep. I got up at 5 am and shaved my legs in the mens washroom hoping that the good old boys didn't come in and see me. I don't think they would understand? We are looking forward to a short. Day tomorrow so we can recover a bit.

Mike Coates Day 9- rest day. We rode 50kms into Astoria in 2 hours and checked into a motel to clean ourselves up a bit. All our gear was wet from the fog. We went to the laundry and washed our clothes. We also went to the bike shop for some running repairs. Brendan had bottom bracket issues and I had a broken seat post. The bile shop guy wouldn't fix my seat post but he agreed to let me use his workshop. I went to the hardware store for supplies and made the repairs. I also bought a new helmet as mine was so rank, I had stopped wearing it. We walked around town all day to get some of the crap out of our legs. We had an early dinner and an early night. Tomorrow we start the Oregon coast which is the most rugged and challenging section.

Mike Coates The ride so far - over the first 8 days we did 798 kms. Our average speed was just over 20kms per hour, so we have spent over 40 hours riding. Under the circumstances my hamstring injury has behaved really well. The only real issue is getting in and out of my tent and sleeping bag where it tends to spasm/ cramp. My right knee is pretty sore which I am guessing is my strong leg compensating for my week one. No complaints though, it's still heaps better than being at work. Brendans back has settled right down now so the ride has done him good. He is also having a few sore knee issues. Votarin is our freind. We are both dropping a fair bit of weight which as you know won't hurt us. The big fella hasn't even had a beer yet. We also haven't had a fight yet. Above all we are having a great ride!!!! After riding past many tourist viewpoints brendan announced that " we are not tourists, we are cyclists". And that about sums it up. The views are great but we are here for the ride

Mike Coates Day 10 - 45 miles(72kms) ride time 4 hours. I woke up yesterday with a sore throat. Today I woke with a full blown cold. A combination of vitamin c, panadine forte and coffee has just kept me going to get a little way down from Astoria. We decided the best thing to do was pull up short and try to recover a bit. We found a fantastic fresh food market and spent $50 on food for lunch and dinner. We have a great camp by the beach and a couple of hours sleep thisarvo should have me firing again tomorrow. The Oregon coast is spectacular and the roads are mostly safe. We had 1 tunnel today ( see video ) which was scary. It's Saturday here so there is heaps of weekend traffic. Almost no cyclists? We found a little bike shop called miles bikes today and we dropped in. Mike showed us a couple of good backroads to try. The bikes are going great ( all fixed). Viva la revolution

Mike Coates Day 11 - 50 miles (80 mms) ride time 4.5 hours . Woke up pretty sick and decided to start a course of antibiotics to try and clear my chest. Lots of coffee and panadine helped me get through the day. The scenery was stunning and the roads quiet for the early part of the day. We camped in a beautiful forest by a beach and saw an awesome sunset. Had to hang the food as the ranger said bears had been reported. Hopefully I will be better tomorrow.seeya

Mike Coates Day 12 - 58 miles(96kms) in 5 hours 20 mins. I woke feeling a little better today and despite the weather being a little cool at times, we had a good day. 3 major climbs spread evenly through the day were manageable. The fog rolled on towards the end of the day which made for a cold and dangerous finish. We saw lots of other cyclists today many on organized tours with a sag wagon ( support vehicle ) and no gear ok their bikes. Brendan always asks them what happened to their gear of they overtake us. We found some great fresh vegies and brendan cooked a great red curry for dinner. We were in bed at 7.20 pm. I know it's sad but we are really stuffed at the end of each day and we can't wait to get to bed . Incidentally we clocked up our first 1000kms sometime today. We think we can make San francisco In about 2 weeks if we can maintain this pace. It seems to be getting a little easier to complete each day now so I guess we are starting to get bike fit.

60+ miles over 5 hours of cold and wet riding. Head wind, nasty divers and shit roads. We got the works. We stopped and had a big Diner breakfast to cheer ourselves up a bit and thaw out. The weather improved a bit in the arvo and we arrived at our camp a little early. I rode 3 miles back into the nearest town and did all our washing. We stayed in the hiker biker with some other guys that we keep bumping into. 2 guys from San Fran and one from Alaska. We had a fun night around the camp fire. There was some thing big in our camp over nite, mosdt probably a deer. The sea lion colony nearby kept us awake.

another 60+ miles in 5.5 hours. 30 miles of headwind in the arvo. The morning riding was great on quite back roads with nice climbs and exciting decents. There we lots of bikes on the road. Too many! We are going to try a new tactic tomorrow to stay away from them. We had a great camp and feed. We have stopped staying in hiker biker campsites and just getting a regular site so we can keep to ourselves more. We are still having huge fun. The costal scenery is mind bogling. The trucks suck.

50 miles in just over 4 hours. Beleive it or not we are calling this a rest day. We left camp as soon as it was light to take advantage of not having to overtake all the other bikes, as well as enjoying a lot less traffic. It stays quiet until around 10.30 am then the roads go crazy with 60+ year old fart RV drivers. When I say quiet I mean just you and the 60 to 100 semi trailers per hour. The roads today were very good with mostly a good shoulder and fantastic views. Lots of climbs. I like climbs because you can get out of the saddle and give your bum a rest. we got into a campsite by midday and have come into town for shopping and R&R. We are at the library. I am doing 3 days worth of updates because I have ent had reception for the phone to do the updates for the last few days. I will post some more photos thisarvo. We were dissapointed to find out yesterday that our freind from San Fran wont be joining us for the last week. We were both looking forward to having someone else to pick on. We cross into California tomorrow and start the last 2 weeks of our trip. Its going so fast I cant beleive it.

Probably one of the most incredible days I have ever spent on a bile , climbing through the giant redwoods forests of northern california. These trees are huge, check out the photo of my bike sitting beside one. We also had a great camp that had wild Elk in the fields and for the first time we were asked to sign a waiver acknowledging that we know we are camping with bears and mountain lions. We were extra careful with our food and toiletries and didnt have any visitors. We broke camp at 7am to make the most of quiet roads. The best day on tour so far!!!

We had another great day riding amongst the giant redwoods. We also got to visit some nice little towns and drink some great coffe. Yes you heard it. We are starting to work out how to sniff them out. We also went to a town hippie festival and had a good laugh at the ferrels. We visited a bike shop where I did some running repairs. I had to replace my back tyre and my pedals. The bike is all good again and should be fine to get me to San Fran. We have about 6 days to go. Tomorrow we go to the avenue of the giants where the trees get even bigger!!

Mike Coates is peddling, passed 2100km today.

Mike Coates Day 19 - 61 miles 5.5hours. The day started in nice flatish farm country. We visited a cheese factory and finally found some nice cheese. We also found out why American cheese is orange. In the arvo we climbed to the start of the avenue of the giants. That is 35 miles of road that winds through a beautiful redwood forest. I have posted some photos of the trees. It doesn't do them justice. We camped on a beautiful camp ground amongst the trees.

Mike Coates Day 20- 73 miles in 6.5 hours. The day started amongst the redwoods. We had an early coffee in a little logging town where we had a fun chat with the owner. Then we stopped for lunch at a roadside diner before we climbed a 2100 foot burg that nearly cracked us. That was followed by a second climb to 900 ft before we descended to the coast. It was a hard day buy we finished at a camp ok top of a cliff over the ocean. No shower and really shifty camp dinner and in bed by 7 pm.

Mike Coates Day21 - 59 miles in 5.5hours. A day spent on the coast dodging rv's and logging trucks. It was a day of constant climbing over headlands. The coast is rugged and beautiful with the fog never far away. The kelp Is so thick and is everywhere. At the end of the day we found a koa campsite that had a heated pool and a spa. Oh yeah!! We also got to do our washing and dry out our gear. The damp is constant very much like new Zealand. I still can't beleive that I can get into bed at 7 pm and sleep all night , and still not want to get up in the morning. We seem to be able to handle about 60 miles a day consistently. When we go over that, we start getting too tired. We still haven't had a fight. I think it's not far off though. 2 days to San francisco.

Mike Coates Day 22 -70 miles in 5.5 hours. Lots of climbing today as we stuck to the coastal cliffs. We stopped at mile 20 at a little village and had a Mexican breakfast. It came out my nose for the next 50 miles. The fog stayed mostly away today so we got lots of sun. We passed 2100 kms today. We are nearly to San francisco. Only about 70 miles to go. I made some calls today and managed to book us into a very popular walk in campsite right beside the golden gate bridge. We should make it there tomorrow night if my navigation holds out. That means we will ride accross the bridge on Saturday morning. We are going to stay with freinds on Saturday night and head south again on Sunday. Our freind john is going to join us. We have 1 more week of riding. Kinda sad really.

Mike Coates What was in camp last night? We had a busy night in camp with all of the garbage bins trashed so to speak. Whatever creature did it sure made a mess. I didn't feel inclined to get up and investigate as the critter sounded much bigger than a rackoon. The big boy reckons it was a bear. We had all our food and toiletries locked in the bear box so we were not really in danger of a personal visit. Tonight there are no bears but there is mountain lion warning posters everywhere. I am scared of those. I am stating in my tent. Brendans arse scent should keep all life at bay.

Mike Coates Day 23-75 miles,6.5 hoursWe made it to the north side of San francisco harbour tonight. It was a huge day with the first 40 miles in hilly farmland and the last 30 in tricky city traffic. We are staying at the golden gate national park and our camp site is purched on the edge of sf harbour looking at the bridge. Tomorrow we get to ride over it, which is something I have always wanted to do. We managed to scrounge a shower at the youth hostel down the road on our way into camp.We just had a huge bull elk standing on the hill behind our camp watching us for about 5 mins. I will put a photo up but I don't think it will do him any justice. What a great day. In bed by 7.30 again. Must be getting old.

Mike Coates Day 24 - 15 miles into San francisco city centre. It was am uneventful but enjoyable ride put of the national park and across the bridge this morning. The only downer was that the bridgevwas shrouded in fog. We spent about an hour negotiating Saturday morning traffic before arriving at paulas house in haight street. Her and burt have a fantastic town house above what is probably the most famouse street in San francisco. I walked the length of the street today and it was a real spin out. Such a mix of interesting, crazy and outrageous people. It really has to be seen to be beleived. The strangest site was definately a long haired guy walking down the busy street buck naked like he didn't have a care in the world. It was a fantastic day off and we are looking foward to heading off on the road again tomorrow.

Mike Coates Day 25-35 miles from San francisco city to half moon bay. After a lazy start we rode over to johns place to watch/ help him pack then after a quick shopping expedition we headed out of the city. John is an old hand at negotiating the busy city streets and he made us look like clumsy old hubbards. I particularly liked the track stand at the traffic lights on a fully loaded touring bike. As we left the city we entered a section of coast that was the most dangerous of the whole trip. With Sunday Arvo traffic and high winds. Blind corners and no shoulder, I don't mind saying I wasn't a happy camper. The last 15 miles were into a strong headwind and we were happy to make camp. The boys polished off a 6 pack of beers and we went out for a Mexican feed. It's great to have john with us for the last leg of the trip. Someone else to hang shit on.

Mike Coates Day 26- 63 miles from half moon bay to Santa cruz.We had a great days riding. Mondays are always pretty quiet on the roads and we had a good shoulder all day. We found a great little town a couple of miles off the main road at the 15 mile mark where we had a great coffee and bought some great bread for lunch. We road on to sant cruz where we visited the bike shop for supplies and repairs, and a whole foods to buy stuff for dinner. We mad camp south of Santa cruz around 4 pm and made hamburgers for dinner. It is a nice camp ground on the beach at new Brighton. It's great having a third person and the general banter and person attacks are mercellous. The camp ground is very busy and noisy tonight so we have all gone to bed with ear plugs and sleeping pills

Mike Coates Day 27 Santa cruz to monteray bay -43 miles 4 hours. It was supposed to be an easy day but we were all glad when it was over. Most of the day was spent inland going through farm country. The size and scale of the Californian strawberry industry was amazing. At the end of the day we headed back to the coast and finished the ride on top of a bloody great hill overlooking Monterey bay. We made a nice camp and headed for town for the Arvo. We were lucky that there was a street fair on so we got to eat some great food. We also took a long walk to the aqarium which was spectacular. We were all really stuffed and were of to bed at 8pm. Tomorrow we head to big sir. It is going to be a big day so we are going to leave at dawn to beat the heat and the traffic. We will pass 2600 kms tomorrow. Only 3 days to go. The whole trip is just a blur at the moment.

Mike Coates Day 28-75 miles, the fireToday turned out a bit bigger than expected and certainly our toughest day since leaving sf. After a morning of coffee shopping in Monterey we followed a beautiful road around the coast bofore getting on highway 1 and heading south. There were lots of big climbs to contend with and also the worry of a forest fire ahead. After passing big sir which was devastated by fire earlier this year we made our way along thevrugged coast to our camp at kemp creek. Unfortunately it was under evacuation because there was a bloody great bush fire over it. We took off further south before they closed the road and found a nice camp about 6 miles down the road. A water bottle shower and a nice pasta dinner and off to bed.

Mike Coates Day 29 - 63 miles and a tailwindAn easy 100 odd mms today apart from a couple of big hills earlier in the day. We enjoyed a stiff tail wind for most of the afternoon. The highlite of the day was definately our trip to the hearst castle. We took a 2 hour tour. It was fantastic. Look it up on the web. We are camped tonight at morro heads at a nice noisy camp as usual. We went out for dinner tonight to a seafood joint at the marina. It was yum. The weather is still great.

Mike Coates Day 30- 125 miles(201kms) oh yeah first time over 200 for me. It to 9.5 hours in the saddle.I left the other guy today as they had to head back to San francisco. I decided that LA was to close to resist trying for. I am at santa barbers tonight and I am going to try to do the final 90 miles tomorrow. I am sitting with a bag of ice on each knee trying to get them to settle down a bit. Today was actually a great ride. I only spent about 20 miles on the freeway. The rest of the day was spent on quiet back roads. A highlight was the 13.5 mile climb in the middle of the day ( not). The route went way inland through nice farming country and then climbed back over the coastal range to the water again. Tomorrow will all be ok the coastal strip. Santa barbers is beautiful with the palm trees and the high mountains behind. I took a walk on the peir tonight, ate a huge pizza, and got my laundry done. Early start tomorrow if my knees agree.

Well I made it to LA. The last day as it turns out was one of the best. I left Santa Barbera a little before dawn. The idea was to get to LA by lunchtime so I could do the 6 hour drive back to San Francisco in time to go to the Dandy Warholes concert. As it turned out I was being a little ambitious. All was going well until I encountered a Rotary club Fun run on the bike path to ventura. That took the wind out of my sails. Once past that 10 mile blockage I stopped in ventura for a quad shot esspresso before heading south. Then the rain started. The good thing about the rain was that the traffic was quieter. Malibu was a spin out. The whole joint is slowly washing into the pacific. The riding was pretty dodgy though and I was glad when I finally hit the bike path at Santa Monica. From then on it was a doddle. The sun even came out for the last hour through venice beach. Once past venice I braved the traffic one last time to ride over to the car hire places near LAX. I got a car and got the hell out of dodge around 4 pm. I drove a couple of hours up the 5 towards San Francisco and then found a motel for the night What a day.

I am flying home tonight. I looked on line and found out that I missed out on my points upgrade to business class. I was not happy. I decided to try a little argy bargy. I rocked up to the airport and took my place in the business class check in line like I was supposed to be there. When I got to the check in the guy said " i am sorry mr Coates we only have you in economy" I said thats strange I had business on the way over and I palmed him some cash and asked him if there was anything he could do. I am not going to say how much money changed hands but I got my upgrade. After I cleared customs I was walking to the gate lounge when somebody came from behind and said hello mr coates where are you headed. It was the guy from the check in. I said to the gate. He said to come with him and he took me to the first class lounge. It is very nice. I am lucky boy. That is how america works.

I just gotup at 3.30 Am. I dont like net lag very much. Anyway I thought I would use the quiet time to reflect on the last 7 weeks. Wow what a journey. I got the touring atlas and retraced our ride with a highlighter. That was a pretty big ride when you look at it like that all in one go. Without getting too deep, its like a metaphor for how you go places in life. If you tackle little bits at a time , the task you set for yourself doesnt seem so overwhelming. Eventually you reach your goal. Yeah I know I will get some shit for writing that but its true.As I traced my way dowm the map, the town names jogged memories of what happened on the ride. I guess thats going to be happening for a while. The trip was complete sensory overload. While I was in it I couldnt remember what I did 3 days before. It was the biggest adventure of my life so far. I loved it and dont regret a minute of it. However I wouldnt do it again. It was a little too dangerous for my liking. If I didnt have a lovely family at home waiting for me I am sure my attitude would be different. But you tend to change your views when you have a real lot to lose. Anyway it all ended well and I am back at home again just like I never left. Getting ready for an early morning ride on my bike with lisa. Very nice
